On February 20, 2023, young activists in Windhoek, Namibia, gathered at Havana Project School to demand justice for Africa’s most vulnerable children. As part of the Justice for Africa campaign, they met with the National Youth Council, raising concerns about the ongoing injustices faced by children in Namibia. Their mission was clear—to ensure every child has access to education, protection, and a safe future.
Despite Namibia’s progress in youth development, thousands of children continue to suffer due to poverty, education inequality, child labor, and systemic injustices. Determined to create change, youth leaders presented policy recommendations that address these pressing issues and urge government accountability.
Addressing the Urgent Needs of Namibia’s Children
Namibia’s children face significant challenges that hinder their ability to thrive. The youth activists identified key areas that require urgent attention, including:
Ending Child Labor & Exploitation – Many children in Namibia are forced into hazardous labor conditions, preventing them from attending school. Activists called for stronger child protection laws and stricter enforcement to eliminate child labor.
Expanding Access to Quality Education – Many children in underserved communities lack access to proper school facilities, teachers, and learning materials. The youth emphasized the need for better investment in education infrastructure and resources.
Strengthening Child Welfare Programs – Vulnerable children, including orphans and those in extreme poverty, lack adequate support systems. Activists urged the government to increase funding for social welfare programs that ensure children receive healthcare, shelter, and proper nutrition.
Ensuring Government Accountability – Many policies designed to protect children are not effectively implemented. The youth demanded greater transparency and monitoring systems to ensure laws benefit children directly.
